Salisbury, Conn. — Salisbury School of Connecticut has partnered with Orion Military Scholarship Fund, Inc. to offer military children the opportunity to attend boarding school through a combination of merit-based scholarship funding and need-based financial aid. Salisbury joined Orion’s consortium of eleven member schools last month, joining in the non-profit’s mission to provide stable, uninterrupted high school experiences to children of active duty service men and women.

Military children change schools three times more than civilian peers, often enrolling in nine schools before graduation. Frequent moves and inconsistency between academic programs take a toll on military children, whose unpredictable, mobile lifestyles puts them at significantly greater risk for anxiety, depression, and self-harm during adolescence. Multiple moves also affect military teenagers’ ability to transfer academic credits and progress in sports and extracurricular activities.

Will Webb, Head of Salisbury School, stated, ”Orion is a natural fit for Salisbury School as it aligns with our values and our shared commitment to supporting those who serve our nation. Our close knit community and focus on the growth of the whole child allows us to develop boys into gentlemen who go on to positively impact their communities and our world while forever being a part of the brotherhood.”

“I don’t live in a place for longer than three years, so I never build a connection to them. It is difficult to attempt making new friends, as it often feels the energy required is too much for a temporary friendship,” said Orion Military Scholarship recipient Henry S., whose Army parents moved last summer from Fort Benning, Georgia to Fort Sam Houston, Texas — Henry’s tenth home in thirteen years. Orion and Salisbury have committed to ensuring that more military children like Henry have access to stable educational experiences.

Eric Peterson, cofounder and President of Orion commented, “We are extremely pleased to add Salisbury School to our roster of partner institutions. Salisbury’s longstanding commitment to educating young men provides an exceptional traditional boarding school option for the sons of active duty military personnel in the Orion network.
